MTH6115: Cryptography
This is last year’s webpage, with some information removed.
In particular, the information relating to Lectures and Classes will be wrong.
Also, the marks this year will be C/Work 10% (Cipher Challenge), Final Exam 90%.
I am not lecturing the course this year. The person (Dr Behrang Noohi) who is due to
lecture the course is new to Queen Mary, and has only just arrived.
He will set up his own webpage (for this course) soon, and no doubt make some minor adjustments to the course.

News
The stuff below is PROVISIONAL,
and may be changed yet again, even though the version of the exam timetable
I received this morning (on 31st March) says it is the FINAL version.
EXAM: Friday 6th May 2011, 10:00–12:00 [in Eng 324–325 (most of you; change of room) or FB326 (special arrangements)].
IMPORTANT: On 3rd May we lecturers were informed that the information we had been given was possibly incorrect.
The ‘corrected’ version indicates that the main information vis-à-vis the exams for this
module is correct, but I do not know about the special arrangements.
Please check your exam timetables in SIS and hope that no disceprancy arises (and hope that your exam
is where you think it is).
Frankly I have no confidence that said exam will be held where and when advertised (but you must turn
up at these places and times anyway); if it is not
then you can be assured that many robust complaints will emanate from the Maths
department in respect of this issue.
(I will be at the start of your exam—in the advertised place of course—in line with current university policy.)
Revision Lecture: Tuesday 26th April, 4:00 pm in the Maths Lecture Theatre.
31-iii-2011: Solutions to all exercises now up on the web.
19-i-2011: ROOM CHANGE. The room for the Wednesday tutorial was entered
incorrectly on the timetable. The correct room is Jones UG1.
Apologies to those who turned up who we didn’t manage to rescue.
Lectures and Classes (Lent term, Winter/Spring 2011)
Lectures: Tuesday 1pm; Tuesday 3pm; Thursday 9am. PP2 for now, Maths Lecture Theatre later in term.
Classes: Wednesday 11am (surnames beginning A–M), Jones UG1 (NOT Queen’s EB1);
Thursday 2pm (surnames beginning N–Z), Jones LG1.
Office Hours: Please see my main page. These will change from time to time.
Assignments: These should be handed in to the ORANGE box on the GROUND floor.
Classes will not occur every week: for instance there are no classes in Week 1.
Nor will there be any classes during the Cipher Challenge.

Cipher Challenge
The rules are now that of this year’s version.
Please read VERY CAREFULLY, and make sure you understand everything
contained therein. In particular, the rules differ from those in force last year.
NB: It seems that on Microsoft Windows the Notepad application produces the nearest approximation
to plain text. Please remember to press ENTER (also called RETURN)
at the ends of your files.
- Rules for Part 1 (PDF).
- Rules for Part 2 — placeholder page. Please read very carefully. This is not likely to commence
till Friday 18th Feb at the earliest.

Solutions
Notes and Supplementary Data
Please note that I will not necessarily place all the notes I make
in lectures on the web, so you should make your own notes in lectures.
Also note that some of this material was not necessarily covered in lectures.
There are certain things that it will be impractical to copy in lectures.
I will place that stuff here.
The material available so far is:
Ciphers for you to try
These are some more ciphers you can try to crack. I will not make solutions available
for these. I have included some examples from the notes too.
Old Notes
These are the notes from a few years ago. I shall present the material a bit differently to this,
and not necessarily cover all the material in the notes.
Notes 1; Notes 2;
Notes 3; Notes 4;
Notes 5; Notes 6;
Notes 7; Notes 8;
Notes 9; Notes 10;
Notes 11; Notes 12.
Past Papers
Solutions to past papers will NOT be made available. Please come to see me
during my office hours if you have problems with the questions.
