`Quantum Anomalies and the Origin of Time’, Talk at the Cambridge Science Festival
The talk took place in the Mill Lane Lecture rooms where I had sat many an hour as an undergraduate, so that was fun. Well advertised so that the room was full to capacity, and they also managed to sell many copies of On Space and Time at the CUP desk after the talk. I expand on one of my blog pieces about what I call the algebraic origin of time. Click in the above to download the talk. Basically, newtonian ideas of differential calculus have an obstruction or anomaly on passage to the quantum world and this, I argued, is the reason why things evolve in the first place. I am not sure how much sense the talk will make without the commentary but try the public blog piece, and Chapter 2 of On Space and Time if you have it for some of the background material. Also check out the Science Festival for another year.
Please note that the talk is for private use, not for duplication or circulation and copyright on some images would belong as per the book chapter, please refer there where applicable.
